Dr. Mason Stewart, DC of New Leaf House Call Chiropractic in Post Falls, ID administers muscle scraping on the elbow of a male patient.

What are Muscle Scraping and Cupping?

Muscle scraping and cupping are two non-invasive soft tissue therapies we offer!

Muscle scraping, also known as Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), involves the use of specialized metal tools to scrape the skin and underlying muscles, connective tissue, and fascia. It is similar to the Graston Technique or Gua Sha.

Cupping therapy achieves similar results, but instead uses silicone cups to create suction. The suction combined with movement helps lift and separate the skin and muscle layers. Scraping and cupping can help break down scar tissue, release fascial adhesions, and stimulate blood flow to the treated areas, promoting healing and reducing pain.

Conditions that may be helped by Muscle Scraping and Cupping:

 Muscle Pain and Tension

 Scar Tissue and Adhesions

 Inflammation and Swelling

 Chronic Pain Conditions

…and more!

What is a Muscle Scraping or Cupping treatment like?

When scraping, Dr. Stewart treats the area with metal tools combined with lotion. He focuses on knots, scar tissue, and inflamed tendons or ligaments. He utilizes both cross fiber scraping and multi-directional techniques to most effectively break up adhesions.

When cupping, lotion is similarly applied to reduce irritation, and a silicone cup is suctioned to the skin. Dr. Stewart moves the cup around the treatment area to break up adhesions, with the goal of increasing blood flow and creating space in congested areas. This should not cause any significant bruising, but may leave the patient with small red bruises called petechiae. Our policy is that if you have major bruising after cupping, the treatment was too intense!

Depending on the location of the treatment area, the patient may need to dress in shorts, a provided gown, or other clothing that preserves the patient’s modesty while still allowing the doctor access to the skin over the treatment area.
